Legal Duties

As a school we welcome our duties under the Equality Act 2010. 

The general duties are to:

  • eliminate discrimination,
  • advance equality of opportunity
  • foster good relations

We understand the principal of the act and the work needed to ensure that those with protected characteristics are not discriminated against and are given equality of opportunity. 

A protected characteristic under the act covers the groups listed below:

  • age (for employees not for service provision),
  • disability
  • race
  • sex (including issues of transgender)
  • gender reassignment
  • maternity and pregnancy
  • religion and belief,
  • sexual orientation
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership (for employees)

At St William of York, we support our children to grow in their faith, to understand their role in the world as good Christians, showing love and respect for each other and everyone they meet.

We will:

(a)  eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by or under this Act;

(b)  advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it;

(c)  foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.

We will:

(a)  tackle prejudice, and

(b)  promote understanding

We will do this within the curriculum, by challenging stereotypes, misconceptions, promoting positive role models and reflecting the diversity of our community. We will provide pupils with a rich curriculum to educate and teach them about other faiths, cultures, beliefs and abilities.
