Yr4 Trip to Deptford Creekside

Yr4 had a fantastic time river wading at Deptford Creekside. They learnt loads about rivers and the water cycle.

Our Year 4 explorers traded their school shoes for waders this week as they headed to Deptford Creekside for a hands-on adventure into the world of rivers.

The trip served as the "splashing" finale to our current topic on Rivers and the Water Cycle. While we’ve spent plenty of time in the classroom looking at diagrams of the long profile of a river, there is truly no substitute for getting knee-deep in the real thing.

Guided by the experts at the Creekside Discovery Centre, the children braved the low tide to step directly into the river bed. This immersive experience allowed them to see the physical geography of a tidal creek up close.

During their expedition, students focused on:

  • Flow and Erosion: Observing how the movement of the water shapes the river banks.

  • Local Biodiversity: Identifying the unique plants and animals that call this brackish water home.

  • The Water Cycle in Action: Discussing how the creek connects to the Thames and eventually the wider ocean.

It wasn't just about the wading! The children became "citizen scientists" for the day, examining the various invertebrates found in the silt. They used their knowledge of food chains to understand how pollution and urban environments can impact the health of our local waterways.

Despite a few splashes and some very muddy waders, the Year 4 team returned to school with a much deeper understanding of how rivers function as the lifeblood of our ecosystem. A huge thank you to the staff at Deptford Creekside for such a memorable day of learning.
