World Book Day at SWOY

We had a magical World Book Day at SWOY this week. Each class focused on a different mythical creature and we are creating a whole school bestiary!
The hallways of our school were transformed into a realm of wonder this week as we celebrated World Book Day 2026. It was a day dedicated to the joy of reading, the power of imagination, and the magic found within the pages of our favourite stories. Whether students arrived dressed as iconic literary heroes or snuggled up in their favourite pyjamas, the spirit of storytelling was everywhere.
This year, we saw a fantastic variety of characters roaming the playground, from classic fairy-tale protagonists to modern-day graphic novel heroes. For those who chose the bedtime story theme, the atmosphere was wonderfully cosy. Classes spent time sharing their favourite evening reads, discussing why these particular stories help them drift off into dreams. It was a lovely reminder that reading isn't just a school subject, it's a lifelong comfort.
The highlight of the day was our school-wide focus on mythical creatures. Each classroom became a habitat for a different legendary beast, sparking a wave of creative energy across every year group. To capture the magic, we are compiling a whole school bestiary—a grand encyclopaedia of monsters and marvels. Each year group is contributing a different style of writing to the collection.
World Book Day is about more than just dressing up; it’s about fostering a reading for pleasure culture. By connecting mythical creatures with creative writing, students saw how their own ideas could join the long tradition of legendary storytelling. The finished bestiary will be displayed in the school library for all students to enjoy, serving as a lasting memory of a truly enchanting day.
Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are.
