Yr5 & Yr6 Talk Consent Workshops

As part of our safeguarding curriculum, Yr5 & Yr6 took part in workshops about keeping themselves safe
This week, our Upper Key Stage 2 students took part in a series of vital and thought-provoking sessions as part of our Talk Consent workshops. These sessions are designed to give children the tools they need to navigate social interactions with confidence, empathy, and a strong sense of self-awareness.
In Year 5, the focus was centred on the fundamental importance of personal boundaries. The children explored what it means to have physical and emotional space and discussed practical ways to keep themselves safe. A key takeaway from the session was the dual nature of respect: learning how to clearly communicate their own limits while also being deeply attentive to the boundaries of those around them. The students engaged in mature discussions about how "no" should always be respected and how to check in with friends to ensure everyone feels comfortable during play and conversation.
Moving into Year 6, the pupils stepped into the role of the active bystander. This workshop pushed the children to think beyond their own immediate actions and consider their responsibility within a group. They practised identifying situations where someone might be feeling pressured or uncomfortable and brainstormed safe, effective ways to intervene. By learning how to be an active bystander, our Year 6 students are developing the leadership skills necessary to foster a culture of kindness and accountability across the entire school.
The staff and workshop leaders were incredibly impressed by the conduct of all the children involved. Our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils were absolutely fabulous throughout the day, showing a high level of emotional intelligence and a genuine commitment to making our school a safe space for everyone. Their ability to tackle such important, complex topics with sensitivity and maturity was a credit to themselves and the school.
We are confident that the lessons learnt this week will stick with our students as they continue to grow into responsible and respectful young citizens.
